NJADS Competitive Dance Team!

About the Style

Ready to take your learning to the next level?  Consider our Elite Dance Program!  NJADS is proud to offer a competitive dance program that balances hard-work, discipline and training with passion, teamwork and FUN!  NJADS Competitive Team is by AUDITION or INVITATION ONLY and placement is at the sole discretion of NJADS Studio Director, NJADS Artistic Director and NJADS Teachers.  Auditions are typically held mid to end of May.

The life skills your child learns from dance class grow even deeper when they are part of our Elite Dance Program.  Our Competitive Dance Team Members are role models in the studio and the community, and are held to an extra-high standard when it comes to attendance, leadership and responsibility.

They must commit to be motivated, to work full-out in their classes and rehearsals, and to take and implement corrections from their teachers without complaint.  They commit to always represent their team and Not Just Another Dance Studio in a positive manner.  Dancers are not just learning exciting performance routines; they’re learning how to follow-through on commitments, how to support one another, and how to never give up!

Our Elite Team Program develops well-rounded dancers through advanced training, competitive performance, and community engagement. We see competitions as valuable growth experiences where dancers refine their technique, gain performance insight, and build lasting friendships through teamwork and mutual support. The focus is on the journey of personal and artistic development rather than just the results.

At Not Just Another Dance Studio we commit the following to our Elite Dance Team:

  • We will continue to be the studio that always has a staff member backstage before and after our dancers go on stage to cheer them on and support them!
  • We will always be the studio that uses positive reinforcement to achieve results!
  • We will always be the studio that focuses on our dancers doing their personal best over winning!

Selection Criteria

NJADS Elite Team Dancers have strong work ethics and high energy.  They will work hard on their technique, choreography and showmanship.  Dancers must give 100% in all classes, rehearsals and when onstage.  Dancers are selected for NJADS Competition Teams from year-to-year based on having a growth mindset, and their ability to demonstrate the following criteria:

  • Ability and Technique
  • Positive Attitude and Level of Commitment
  • Punctuality and effort to class
  • Acceptance and application of feedback/corrections
  • Improvement year over year

Competitive Levels

There are three (3) different levels of Competitive students:  Novice, Pre-Competitive and Competitive.  We place each dancer at the level that best matches their technical mastery and mental readiness, ensuring they are set up for success and growth.

NOVICE:

  • First-year competition student & dancing less than 6 hours/week.
  • Mandatory Classes: 1 RAD Ballet class weekly (Ballet team does not qualify as the mandatory ballet).
  • Solo/Duet/Trio: Not offered for first year Elite Team members.

PRE-COMPETITIVE:

  • Dancing 6 hours/week or less.
  • Mandatory Classes: One (1) RAD Ballet class weekly.
  • Solo/Duet/Trio: May be offered after 1 year of Elite Team experience.

COMPETITIVE:

  • Invite-only (by teacher recommendation & approval) after a minimum of 1 year competing at the pre-competitive level. Dancers advancing to the Full-Competitive level are chosen based on their proven technical skills (strong foundation in technique, strength, flexibility, control and precision), commitment, and readiness for a more demanding training schedule. Dancers must demonstrate that they can handle increased training intensity — with more weekly hours — while prioritizing dance and fully dedicating themselves to their team.
  • Dances over 6 hours/week.
  • Mandatory Classes: Two (2) RAD Ballet classes weekly (ballet team and pointe classes do not count as a mandatory ballet technique class); One (1) Jazz class (recreational class or competitive team); One (1) Jumps & Turns class.
  • Once a dancer has competed at the Full-Competitive level for a season, they cannot move back down to Pre-Competitive

Both programs provide valuable training and performance experience, but Full-Competitive dancers take on a greater commitment with higher expectations for growth, discipline, and performance quality.  When considering if a dancer is ready to compete at the full-competitive level, we take into consideration a dancer’s Technique & Strength:  precision, control, and flexibility, Performance Readiness: Consistency in execution and stage presence and Endurance & Mental Preparedness: Stamina and resilience to meet the demands of advanced training.
