Mike Glenney – Guest Instructor

Dance Instructor

He/Him

We are excited to have Mike Glenney visit our studio as a guest instructor at our Tap Intensive during July 2023.

Mike discovered his passion for dance at the young age of 6 and has since become a versatile dancer and sought-after instructor, choreographer, and adjudicator. He has trained extensively in tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, ballet, partnering, and musical theatre. Proud to call Hamilton, Ontario home, Mike
cherishes every opportunity to continue to travel and share the art with students and audiences around the globe.

Mike was the World Tap Dance Champion in the “Battle of the Feet” in both 2016 and 2018. Along with his title wins, he won a total of 12 medals in his appearances at the World Tap Dance Championships in Germany, before returning to teach master classes and judge at the event. Mike is proud to have trained and choreographed for the “Canadian National Tap Team” (IDO and World Performers), the “German National Dance Teams” (Tap, Jazz), and the “Italian National Tap Team” in addition to providing training for the South African National Tap Team. His students have seen remarkable success at world-level events, with highlights including Silver medals at the “Commonwealth Dance Cup” in South Africa, and Gold medals at the German and Italian National Tap Championships, “World Dance Cup” and “World Tap Dance Championships”.

Mike began teaching dance in 2009. He continued on to spend two years dancing aboard the “Disney Dream” and “Fantasy” cruise ships, before returning home to reignite his teaching career. Despite his focus on teaching, Mike has never lost his love for performing. Mike was a founding member of Everett Smith’s tap company “Bringing Tap Back” (where he also had the chance to showcase his choreography),
and has performed with Shawn Byfield’s “Funk Factory” and Suzy Guarino-Hall’s “Tap 24.7”, in addition to creating work for the “Detroit Tap Repertory” and “RhythmiCLE Sound Tap Company” in Cleveland. Other projects have included: “The Miss America Pageant”, the “Humber River Hospital Benefit”, “Southlake Hospital Gala”, featured performances for “McDonald’s Canada” and “Delta Hotels International”, and a guest solo performance with the “True Jive Pluckers” and the “Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra”.
In 2020, when the world pivoted to online learning, Mike quickly adapted by transitioning his company, “Music in Motion,” to offer free tap training online.

Together with renowned guest teachers from around the world, Mike’s classes reached dancers from over 70 countries, amassing over 200,000 views and 30,000 hours of viewing time.

Mike is proud to have become a sought-after performer, instructor, choreographer, and adjudicator throughout Canada and beyond. Above all else, Mike cherishes his time spent encouraging and inspiring his students and imbuing them with the same love of dance and performance that has him shuffling down the street.
