What Does “Technique” Really Look Like in Dance Class?

 October 2, 2025      njads

At Not Just Another Dance Studio, we often hear from parents who say, “I love that my child is having fun—but I’d like to see more technique.” It’s a great question, and one we’re always happy to explore.

The truth is, technique is at the heart of every class we teach. From warm-ups and across-the-floor exercises to choreography and cool-downs, our instructors are constantly building dancers’ skills in ways that are age-appropriate, engaging, and supportive.

But here’s the thing: technique doesn’t always look like drills or rigid repetition. Especially for younger dancers, it’s woven into playful movement, imaginative prompts, and creative combinations. We focus on posture, alignment, strength, musicality, and movement vocabulary—all while nurturing confidence and joy.

We believe that joy and technique go hand-in-hand. When dancers feel safe, inspired, and celebrated, they’re more likely to take risks, refine their skills, and grow. That’s why our classes are designed to be both fun and foundational—so your dancer can thrive emotionally and technically.

If you’re ever curious about what your dancer is working on, we encourage you to ask! We’re happy to share class highlights and progress updates. You’ll also start seeing occasional “Technique Spotlights” in our newsletters and social posts to showcase the incredible work happening in class.

Thank you for being part of our dance family and for trusting us with your child’s journey. We’re proud of every dancer’s progress and grateful for your continued support.
