Choosing the Right RAD Path: Exams, Class Awards, and Your Child’s Confidence

 February 25, 2026      njads

As exam season approaches, I wanted to take a moment to explain the difference between a Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Exam and a Class Award with the Royal Academy of Dance.

A graded exam is a more formal assessment. Dancers perform individually for the examiner and are assessed in more depth on technique, musicality, and performance. It can feel a little more intense, as students are marked individually and receive a detailed report and mark.

A Class Award, on the other hand, is done in small groups. Dancers are still assessed and receive a certificate from RAD, but the environment is a little more supportive and less formal. The focus is on celebrating their progress, building confidence, and helping them feel successful in the exam setting.

Both options are wonderful achievements and are equally recognized by the Royal Academy of Dance. The decision about whether a dancer is entered for a graded exam or a class award is always made with great care. It is based on readiness, confidence, maturity, and what will help each child have the most positive and successful experience.

My goal is always to protect your child’s love of dance and help them grow with confidence. Sometimes the Class Award is the best stepping stone toward future exams, and it can be exactly what a dancer needs to feel proud and motivated.

Thank you for trusting me with your children. Watching them grow is truly such a joy.
Miss Anna, RAD RTS
